'Second Best' is a dark comedy about the unmatchable connection of identical twin sisters. Velika Bortsov works in a spa shop while her twin sister, Nouchka, is a professional rhythmic gymnast. Their mother, Dina, has pinned her ambitions to Nouchka’s gymnastics career and in her determination to win she encourages a competitive wedge between her two daughters. Velika and Nouchka are seemingly isolated from each other, leading very separate lives, until a turn of events reawakens the power of their unwavering bond.
Alyssa McClelland is an Australian director and writer. She directed, wrote and starred in the cult-hit web series ‘One Step Closer To Home'. The series notched up a 98% funny rating on Funny-or-Die and screened at LA WebFest, where Alyssa won the Best Comedic Actress award. Alyssa's first short film 'Emilia Eckle' had a very successful run on the international film festival circuit and her second short film ‘Nic and Shauna’ was a finalist in the world’s largest short film festival, Tropfest. Alyssa is signed as a director to the production company FINCH in Australia and New Zealand and has directed local and international advertising campaigns for the likes of Apple, Samsung, Netflix, McDonalds, Telstra and Realestate.com. Her advertising work has won the coveted Black Pencil at the D&AD Awards and the award for Direction at the London International Awards. Alyssa was the winner of the InStyle Magazine Woman Of Style Award scholarship for her work as a filmmaker and she most recently won the award for Best Direction in an Australian Short Film for her short film ‘Second Best’ at Flickerfest International Film Festival 2018.
